WINTER WEATHER READY
Staying cozy when the cold front hits aren’t just for humans. Just because our furry friends have a more permanent winter coat doesn’t mean they couldn’t use a little extra help staying comfy and safe. There are a few things we can do to ensure our pets are just as snug as we are this winter from keeping fur clean to protecting their little paws.
SLEEK FUR: Less is more when it comes to winter grooming. The skin's natural oils are the best barriers against dry winters, especially for pets with sensitive skin. Limiting the use of shampoos and soaps is ideal while using gentle cleansers with natural ingredients is always your best bet. Regular brushing with soft bristles helps to stimulate fur growth and encourage new, healthy skin growth.
PAW PROTECTION: Give your pet a little pep in their step with a new pair of booties! This will keep their feet protected in slippery ice conditions, as well as prevent the ingestion of any potentially toxic rock salts when they lick their paws. It’s also a good idea to towel dry their furry feet. Prevent ice burns and dry, cracked skin with a quick rub down after a walk through wet winter conditions.
DRY-SKIN SOLUTIONS: Natural healing balms, moisturizers and gentle shampoos are the key to keeping skin healthy and supple. With dry skin, look to natural remedies for a safe solution. Oatmeal baths are known for their anti-inflammatory benefits and providing immediate relief. Vitamin E oils are also great for soothing damaged skin and moisturizing thanks to its richness of antioxidants.
NUTRITIOUS DIET: Just like us, taking extra precautions with nutrition during seasonal changes can be a top prevention tip. Fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 are known to help boost the immune system and improve skin and coat health. Making sure your pet is properly hydrated and has foods that are whole and rich in nutrients are simple ways to keep your pet in the best of shape. As always, consult with your veterinarian before switching diets or adding supplements.
