The Benefits of Dog Massage
Just like humans, dogs can feel a little “ruff” around the edges from time to time. Giving your furry friend a massage can help ease any tension and stress they may be feeling, improve blood circulation, and even help with joint mobility. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to bond with your furry friend and show them just how much you care!
While it might seem silly or even ~extra~, massaging is extremely beneficial for your pup. A doggie massage can help with:
Relaxation: Massaging your dog promotes a sense of calming and relaxation – just like a massage does for humans. This is particularly useful for dogs who may be anxious or nervous.
Pain Relief: Massaging your dog can help to relieve any pain, soreness or discomfort they may be experiencing. It can also improve their range of motion and flexibility. So after a long hike, or day of playing, an extra-good rubdown will have your pup melting into a puddle of blissful doggie happiness!

All of this said, it’s important to know you shouldn’t massage your dog like you would massage another person. Using similar pressure would most likely be too rough for them and cause adverse effects, so instead, using gentle motions and techniques to make sure they’re comfortable is key to becoming your doggie’s favorite masseuse. Here are some tips to get you started on giving a relaxing massage:
Make sure that your dog is in a calm, submissive state before you begin the massage. While one of the goals is relaxation for your dog, starting when she’s anxious or fearful may reinforce that mental state instead. You may find the best time to be when you both are simply lounging around the house or before bedtime.
Start your massage by petting your dog gently all over and talk softly to your dog to keep him calm and relaxed.
Massage your dog’s neck by making circular motions (Remember to keep the pressure gentle so they’re comfy).
Continue massaging down toward your dog’s shoulders – Since dogs can’t reach this area of their body, take a little extra time so they can enjoy it!
Move to the chest and front legs. If your dog doesn’t like it when you massage their legs, move on to a different body part. If they do like it, see if she wants her paws massaged too.
* Be careful with the paw pad area, though. Many dogs have an automatic “kick” reflex to anything touching between the pads on their feet.
Massage your dog’s back using circular motions, going up and down on both sides of the spine.
Keep gently massaging your pup until you get to his back legs and tail area. Once you finish, he should be totally calm and stress-free.
A massage is a great way to get in tune with your dog so you know what’s normal for them. In future massage sessions, you’ll be able to notice any differences in your dog’s reactions, which could be informative to any issues they may be experiencing.
